Parish of Belmont, Anglican Church Newcastle, NSW Australia

Ministry

The Rev’d Canon Janet Killen

Janet & GrantI came to the Belmont Anglican Parish after six years of ministry as the Rector in the Beresfield/Thornton Parish; prior to that I was the Assistant Priest at Forster/Tuncurry and at East Maitland. I studied for my Bachelor of Theology through St. Johns Theological College at Morpeth and was ordained in 2002.

I am a member of the 'Society of Catholic Priests' which is an organisation within the Anglican Communion that supports priestly spirituality and formation.

I am also an Honorary Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle; occupying the 'Stretch Canonry'.
[The ‘Stretch Canon’ is named for Bishop Stretch, the 4th Bishop of Newcastle who was installed on June 25th 1906 and was the first Bishop of Newcastle to be Australian born. He held exceptional powers in the Synod and was known as a friendly and happy person. In 1915, after the death of his son in the war and then the death of his wife, the Bishop's health began to decline. Realising that he was no longer capable of his position, he proposed to resign on 30th June 1919, however he died on Easter Eve, 19th April of the same year.
